The location of our offices are quite incredible, except for the steep hill I have to walk up each morning. Duddell Street is a dead end street that leads to a set of unique and picturesque stairs that go up to Ice House Street. Ice House Street is on the side of hill that runs down from Government House (Where the Chief Executive lives) and has gas lamps on pedestals at the top and bottom of the stairs. Our building entrance is right next to those steps.
If I go onto Ice House Street and walk up hill again, I am in Lan Kwai Fong, the big restaurant and bar section of Hong Kong. Every conceivable restaurant type you can think of is in this place from Nepalese, Indian, Russian, German, Belgian, French, Chinese, Nouvelle, you name it. So going to lunch each day is a real adventure. I seem to gravitate to three restaurants. One is Cochrans Bar which has a good and affordable menu at lunch, Habbi Cafe which has good shawarmah and Frites which is a very Belgian beer hall with great food. All of these places are packed at lunch time (well all of the restaurants are packed for that matter), but Frites is I guess my real favorite. The owner is very friendly and always finds a place for me at the bar. Right beside the restaurant is a steep stairs with small vendors selling novelty items that leads down to Queens Road making it fairly easy for me to get back to my office (except for the steep uphill climb).
French fries are, in fact, a Belgian invention and no one does it better. Frites serves the fries with almost everything (hence, the name "Frites"). If you like mussels, then this is definitely the place for you because they serve them up in huge containers steamed in a variety of ways.
They have a second location in Taikoo Place (Taikoo Fong) near to Cityplaza in Oxford House on the ground floor. The same building as CNN studios.
